CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Juri Katou
AGE: 11
CANON: Digimon Tamers

CANON HISTORY:
Digimon Tamers summary + Juri's history*

*Slight altered names due to following dub terminologies, but otherwise identical to the original.
CANON PERSONALITY:
Juri Katou is a funny sort of contradiction; her voice is soothing and mature as she enunciates words rather properly and almost never raises her voice, yet she has a side ponytail and carries a dog sockpuppet around as she lets out a cutesy 'woof!'. Even from the very first glance, she's somewhat of a strange girl.

It's not just her voice, she'd fittingly often give small advice or say things that you'd expect for someone roughly 2-3 years older than her. She loves to play the supportive role, often listening to whatever woes her friends have then tries to help them to her best ability. By nature, she also easily talks to most people and befriends them, so she tends to be the support for more than a handful of people. It's not a mere coincidence that she also has a younger brother, Juri's used to slipping into the soothing, understanding type thanks to watching over her younger sibling. She has much experience listening and caring for others which makes it easy of her peers to like her.

Make no mistake though that while she's calm, she's almost unstoppable when she's excited. Perhaps one of her most notable personality quirk is that she can get carried away with her thoughts. She may appear to be composed, but it isn't surprising to believe that she might have spaced out briefly within her own mind. She has her head in the clouds at times that it leads her to have moments where she jumps to conclusions and hype herself with her own line of logic. When Takato confined to her about a friendship problem -actually about Guilmon evolving to Growlmon for the first time- Juri immediately imagines that this 'friend' is actually Takato's childhood crush who grew awkwardly bigger and he doesn't know what to do. Needless to add to this tendency, there's also her initial expectations on being a Tamer. Her two classmates and friends Hirokazu and Kenta planted the idea at first, then her mind made a run for it. Then she spent the whole day chasing a Digimon she just encountered around the park that they're destined to be partners since the beginning of time. Juri can be strange, especially when an idea gets to her head.

For almost all of her personality quirks, they each bear a much more complex implication than they first appears. Juri Katou is not what she seems.

Perhaps the first thing to address is the fact that her friendly and supportive nature hides a personal motive. While it's not a sinister purpose, it does show that her friendliness isn't simply because she loves having friends. No, there's a deeper reason why she tries to befriend everyone; beneath the surface she's lonely to the point of having an almost unhealthy obsession to never be alone as much as she could be. Because of this, the last thing Juri would want is to ward people away, and while she's like any other kid who loves social interactions, she does somewhat consciously overt her affability so that she'll always have someone to be with.

It needs to be stressed that she genuinely likes people - in fact, it's almost impossible for her to truly hate anyone. The only person she consistently is critical and harsh on is herself. The best example of this is her relationship with her stepmother. Initially, Juri expresses a dislike that's unlike anything we've seen of her interacting with others, Juri practically ignores her existence. However, later on the series, her self-critical personality shows its head as she admits to Takato that she isn't a good girl for doing that to begin with. She expresses more how she dislikes her irrational anger rather than the woman her father married. In fact, quite often that Juri seems to believe herself unkind than how she presents herself and very aware how she craves for emotional attachments.

This also lends some of the truth behind her initial dynamic with her Digimon Leomon as well. The series and supplementary material implies that she initially wanted a Digimon not because she's a fan of the series, not because she wants to train them stronger and certainly not because they approach her - it's because she started to notice her friends and their strong bonds with their Digimon. It's very likely that she came to the conclusion that with a Digimon, she would never have to feel lonely anymore and the fantasy world seem like it was far away from the harsh reality her life had been up until then.

As common as Juri's habit of extreme conclusions can seem comedic and lighthearted, heavy topics aren't spared. Not at all. It wouldn't be a stretch to say that it's where her harsh criticism on herself come from as well as the strain relationship between her and her parents. Being a child, she likely sees the world a bit simpler due to not truly understanding the complexities around her, especially considering her situation and the things she had experience.

All of the darker aspects of her personality quirks becomes fatal to her well being the moment Leomon dies. When he tried to peacefully stop Beezlebubmon and getting stabbed as a result, Juri's traumatically is confronted with reality. The fantasy she wanted where she has a companion that never leaves and to be far away from personal trauma is violently shattered in that moment. Even though with Leomon's help she started gradually edging away from fantasy to accepting reality up until that point, this all harshly destroyed her illusion as she then has no choice but to accept the terrifying truth before her. And the Digimon's last words that were meant for comfort just broke Juri further as her mind saw it about inevitable fate rather than a fate that was by choice.

The thing about Juri is the fact she's still a little girl in the end, any child would react similarly to what she had.

However, contradicting that, she's much more mature than she credits herself. She isn't just good at hiding her real feelings or critically examining her negative behavior to her stepmother as unjust, but she shows so much forgiveness and reason than most people would. Despite Beezlebubmon murdering Leomon for no reason except as a show of strength, Juri still begged for Dukemon to not kill him as she believes that the murder wouldn't truly fixed anything - this is all while it hadn't been even a day after Leomon's death.

That moment of forgiveness also solidifies the truth that Juri truly cares people despite her need to never be alone. It takes a lot of kindness and bravery for someone to not to stop a fight head on but to admit right in front of your dear friend's killer that you forgive them. It's another thing about Juri - she's much braver that what people or herself expects. Although earlier in the series is partially due to naivete, she never truly lost her edge since her fantasy world being shattered. Or when the D-Reaper practically probed her mind and supplied her with nightmares from her memories, for that matter. She may not realize it, but more often than not, Juri faces danger head on even when she's afraid or deep in sorrow. It's not truly easy to permanently break her spirit, especially the moment she realizes the support around her.

Her personality has a darker edge to them and each of the edges carry heavy consequences when she's at her worse. However, at her best, she truly understands and appreciates Leomon's last words to her. She will never actually change, but there's no doubt there's a potential that she can grew from the better of her personality.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:
As far as it goes, Juri is an average girl. However, throughout the series, it's shown that she can do simple ventriloquism with her hand puppet and having a fairly impressive nerves of steel handling drunkards from helping his father's restaurant from time to time.

Juri had been a tamer for a short period of time. What this means is that she has a Digimon partner and has an emotional bond with said Digimon. The Tamers instalment makes an emphasis on how the children and Digimon learn from one another, transferring data so to speak like how the kids input and realize data from the cards onto their Digimon, and even the potential for the Digimon to evolve into their ultimate stage thanks strengthening the bond of a Tamer and their Digimon partner. There's even minor results from the bonds, for instance there's another child 'understanding' what his Digimon -who can only say beeping noises- says without fulling deciphering what's being said.

Leomon is Juri's partner, and due to his death, there's a potential emotional trauma she suffers not only from personal experience but also from the bond between her and Leomon being severed.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Juri Sawamura
AU AGE: 13
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: Her hair is a darker shade of brunette than canon, but otherwise relatively the same.

AU HISTORY:
( Permission for AU history has been checked through and granted from the players of all mentioned characters )

- Juri had been born out of wedlock and set up for adoption the moment she was born, nothing about her biological parents are known. She hadn't been in the orphanage long enough, but she still has some vague memories of it.

- At the age of four, she was adopted by the Sawamura family, the family welcomed her with open arms.

- Life was okay, her brothers treated her as her sister as much as her adopted parents treated her like their daughter; very much. Eijun loves playing with his baby sister and the two get along like a house on fire. Sadly, living in a small town in the middle of nowhere, it's not entirely open minded and the kids often like to remind Juri that she isn't related to her family by blood.

- Kids liked picking on her, tossing her puppet around, or calling her an orphan as an insult. But, usually her brothers defended her, but especially Ryousuke.

- She spends a lot of time with her brothers and sometimes trying to be like them while her initial childhood had been being alienated by her peers. Because of this she picked up softball! It... didn't really go anywhere, she wasn't really into playing the game as much as watching it and wasn't all that exceptional at the sport to begin with. But, she picked up photography instead because she can still try her hand at amateur photojournalism.

- It worked out much better, she practice taking pictures from a second hand camera and tries taking pictures of various subjects. From sports, animals to the scenery.

- Around the time Eijun followed Ryousuke's footsteps and also enrolled to Recolle, Juri on the other hand started middle school and joined the newspaper club as the photojournalist. While she can defend herself from bullies better, kids generally like her more since she's in a club and have a knack for taking good sports pictures.

- This eventually lead her to posting her work online. She doesn't have any big following or anything, she's still in the stages of trying to make friends online. This lead her befriending Minato Arisato and, her newfound idol for photographers, Prompto Argentum.

- Her social life had certainly improved, but her grades aren't doing so hot which worries her parents on whether she's getting good education in that school or not. Since her brothers are doing well in Recolle, they try to roll the idea of transferring to the city's much more accommodating middle school.

- She moves in to her brothers' apartment around October. They might finally have someone who can actually cook. She till has trouble paying attention in class though.

- So far, she's been fairing in Recolle well. Befriending her peers including Xiaolang Li, Noni Sorensen and Mabel Pines.

- Relating her paying attention problem, she's tutored by Dave Strider.

- She's also friends with a lot of older kids she met outside too! People who know of her brothers like Chiyo Matsuoka and Anastasia Vasilieva, or teens who dabbles in sports that she could photograph like Hinata Morisawa.

AU PERSONALITY:
-Gaining family rather than losing loved ones
Juri's family background plays a huge role in molding her personality. Where she had a family and lost her mother at a young age, her reincarnated self doesn't remember or even know of her biological family, having been in an orphanage up until the age of four. The Sawamura family treats her like blood and Juri grows up in a supportive environment that loves her unconditionally. She still has that edge of uncertainty and hash criticism on herself, and thanks to her initial lack of friends in Elementary school, she relied on her brothers until the two left home to pursue education.

-Initially bullied
Constant exposure towards being singled out or bullied shatters Juri's habit of fantasy much sooner than canon. While she does retain some level of wild imagination, she grounds herself much quickly. In addition to that, it's also due to the fact she's much older and never experienced actual real, strange incidents that makes her carry away into a contrasting fantasy land. She doesn't develop the need to with people constantly, however it does made her hesitant to befriend people fitting certain appearance or behavior like the classmates that bullies her.

-Healthy hobbies and support around her
The biggest change besides her family is the fact she's given the chance to breath and to direct herself into a healthier outlet; hobbies. Juri loves her hobbies and they act as an anchor for her, it's also thanks to her skills and interest that eventually improves her social life in middle school as well as gaining one online. It's because of her photography that she meets and befriends more people, and it also reignites Juri's enthusiasm to befriend people.
